Esophageal Carcinomas and Carcinomas of the Gastroesophageal Junction
Introduction
In June 2021, the EMA granted marketing authorization to pembrolizumab in combination with a platinum- and fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy for locally advanced unresectable or metastatic esophageal carcinoma and HER2-negative adenocarcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction in adults with tumors expressing PD-L1 (CPS ≥10). As pathologists, we will therefore be conducting immunohistological testing of both squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas (all AEG types) for PD-L1 as necessary.
